In these times, it is essential to protect the retina eye of a ferocious enemy: free radicals, these oxidized molecules that damage cells and tissues, causing degenerative diseases and even cancer. Let us see then what can be done in defense of the retina.
Ultraviolet rays from the sun are the main source of free radicals that attacks the eyes. And to combat free radicals, nothing like antioxidants. And to protect the retina, there are some specials:
- Vitamin C, present in the cells of the retina and protects against damage from free radicals generated by UV radiation, and chemical pollution snuff. It is found in fruits, especially kiwi fruit and citrus, and vegetables.
- Vitamin E prevents the degradation of fats and is present in wheat germ, nuts, oil seeds and avocados.
- Beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A, is found in carrots, mangoes, oranges, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and vegetables in all orange.
- Carotenoids, plant pigments that are powerful antioxidants, can be found in spinach, chard, corn, lettuce and collard greens.
- Flavonoids, plant pigments, the most active are the red or blue that can slow macular degeneration and improve the sensitivity of the retina. They are found in blueberries, strawberries, grapes, pomegranates, blackberries and black olives.
- Minerals such as zinc, copper, magnesium and selenium, are necessary to act antioxidant enzymes. They are present in nuts and legumes.
