Also named altarreina and meadowsweet, the ulmaria is a perennial that reaches 1.5 meters tall and is native to Europe, western Asia and northern Africa.
Root grows a basal rosette of leaves and tough stems erect. The leaves grow sharply divided, the top is green and the underside silvery with lint. The flowers are whitish in color and small size, grouped in families grow. The flowers and stems were collected in summer.
This plant, whose scientific name is Filipendula ulmaria, remains one of the best remedies antacids for acid indigestion, heartburn, gastritis, peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia.
It also relieves flatulence, distension, enteritis, colic and diarrhea. Works well in the treatment of aches and pains, rheumatism, arthritis and gout to calm the inflamed joints.
It can also be used to treat headaches and neuralgia and reducing fever and eruptive infections such as measles and chickenpox. Joint pains and skin ailments can be treated with tea and towels.
It is a good remedy for cystitis and urethritis, fluid retention and kidney problems, and may also help soften the deposits in the body, such as kidney stones and gravel and atherosclerosis in the arteries. The leaf tea is effective in removing liquids.
Diuretic infusion is prepared with 40 grams of leaves of meadowsweet and a liter of water. Boil water and pour over the leaves. Let stand until liquid is warm and strain. Drink three or four cups, sweetened with honey or sugar throughout the day, but be careful, because in high doses can be toxic ulmaria. It is best taken in discontinuous treatments.
It also know that although the white sauce is also the active ingredient salicylic acid, meadowsweet was the end where the acid was extracted, which was isolated in 1890 and was used to make aspirin.
